This Is Your Brain on Music: The Science of a Human Obsession

Daniel J. Levitin, former musician and producer, received his Ph.D. in cognitive neuroscience and in this book studies the mystery of music and why it affects us so deeply. He calls music “the new architecture,” and acknowledges that with the ubiquity of iPods, music has become a kind of “sonic wallpaper.”

I agree with Levitin and believe that music is an integral part of interior design. Music helps to create the intended atmosphere in a room and define the activity that brings a space to life. Whether an integrated, house-wide system is installed or an audio system contained in one room is sufficient, the inclusion of “sonic wallpaper” is an essential consideration early in any interior design project.
